  • The Vector: Attackers utilize .vscode/tasks.json or launch.json files. These files legitimately automate workflows, like starting a local dev server.
  • The Trigger: When you open the cloned repository, VS Code prompts: “Do you trust the authors of the files in this folder?” If you click “Yes”, VS Code automatically executes any configured “runOn”: “folderOpen” tasks.
  • The Execution: The tasks run stealthy system commands (like PowerShell or bash) that fetch an in-memory payload. Because it executes entirely in memory, you get infected before you even look at a single line of JavaScript, and standard antivirus rarely catches it.

3. The “ClickFix” / Fake CAPTCHA Bypass

This is a terrifying blend of social engineering and technical exploitation that bypasses your IDE completely.

  • The Scenario: The “recruiter” sends you a link to a custom portal or a private GitHub/Bitbucket repo to download the assignment.
  • The Trap: You are greeted with a fake browser update screen or a CAPTCHA (“Verify you are human to access this repository”).

Modern frameworks rely heavily on config files (next.config.js, vite.config.js, cargo.toml). Attackers now embed obfuscated code within these files. To the naked eye, it looks like an API call fetching a CDN asset. In reality, it’s fetching a Remote Access Trojan (RAT).

Worse, the payloads have become incredibly sophisticated at evasion. Recent Python payloads drop a hidden .NET binary whose sole purpose is to quietly add the malware’s directory to the Microsoft Defender exception list. Once Defender is blinded, the malware spins up a local Tor Proxy Server to communicate with the attacker, making the traffic invisible to corporate firewalls.

5. Advanced Payloads: OtterCookie & Legitimate Tool Abuse

The malware families being deployed (like OtterCookie and InvisibleFerret) no longer rely on clunky .exe files written to your hard drive.

  • Standard Input Piping: The newest variants spawn a local runtime and pipe the payload directly through the system’s standard input stream.
  • Hiding in Plain Sight: Rather than writing custom keyloggers, the malware silently installs actual, benign open-source packages in the background—like node-global-key-listener to log your keystrokes and screenshot-desktop to watch your screen. Security tools ignore them because they are legitimate packages.

6. The “Wagemole” Flip

If they can’t hack you, they will just take your job. Instead of posting fake jobs to hack candidates, threat actors are now applying for real jobs at western tech companies using stolen identities and deepfake AI video tooling. Once hired and shipped a corporate laptop, they become an insider threat, deploying malware from inside the perimeter or funneling their salary back to state-sponsored groups.


The New Defensive Playbook: Total Isolation

We didn’t make the scammers better; we just forced them out of the shadows. The sophistication has reached a point where you cannot rely on your own ability to “spot the bad code.” They are using the very tools we trust—our IDEs, our clipboards, and standard system binaries—against us.

If you take anything away from this update, let it be this: Do not trust your host machine.

1. Mandatory Total Isolation

Never open, clone, or run recruiter code on your primary OS. Use one of the following:

  • A Non-Persistent VM: Use VirtualBox or VMware with a “Write Filter” or snapshot that you discard immediately after the interview.
  • Network-Disabled Docker:
    docker run -it --network none -v $(pwd)/assignment:/app node:20-slim
  • Cloud-Based IDEs: Use GitHub Codespaces or Gitpod. If the environment gets popped, it’s a throwaway instance that doesn’t have your SSH keys or AWS credentials.

2. VS Code “Restricted Mode” is Your Friend

If you must open a folder locally, never click “Trust Workspace.” Stay in Restricted Mode. It disables tasks, debuggers, and extensions that could be weaponized.

Never use Windows + R or paste commands from a website directly into your terminal. If a “CAPTCHA” asks you to use keyboard shortcuts, it is a scam.

Grep for more than just scripts. Look for:
